What's it like out there?

The Big Bend Chamber of Commerce represents the communities of South Brewster County in the heart of the Big Bend of Texas. Including Big Bend National Park to the east and bordered by Big Bend State Park and the Rio Grande to the west and south, this exotic corner of Texas is truly off the beaten path. What makes this region so extraordinary is not simply what is here, but also what is not; no franchises, billboards or stores with mass produced trinkets.

Fostering individuality and the opportunity to follow one's heart are some of the benefits of life here in the wide open spaces of the Chihuahuan desert. Built by the mining boom that took place here in the early 1900s and then abandoned, today the communities of Terlingua and Study Butte are repopulated ghost towns inhabited by people as diverse and interesting as the landscape they inhabit, and similar to it in nature.

Local enterprises are one of a kind operations developed by their owners in unique and innovative ways. Local builders have become experts in alternative building techniques and energy systems, local artisans create distinctive works with native materials and mediums. The desert itself has inspired countless songs, music, paintings and poems by an
extraordinary roster of musicians and artists.

If all this sounds interesting to you, wait 'til you see the view from the Porch.
